Since the release of Mist’s of Pandaria, I have been using these weekly posts to discuss things that related mostly to PvE. This is because, as a raider, it is the content I experienced first, thus I had opinions about them sooner. I decided this week, however, to look more into the new PvP features that the expansion has brought into World of Warcraft. The first and most obvious feature added to PvP this expansion was the two new Battlegrounds, Temple of Kotmogu and Silvershard Mine.

Compared to the two Battlegrounds that were introduced in the previous expansion these two new ones seem much better. It is not that Twin Peaks and Battle of Gilneas were poorly designed Battlegrounds; in fact, these Battlegrounds are almost identical to two of the most popular Battlegrounds in the history of WoW. They just seemed dull, and uncreative. On the other hand. Temple of Kotmogu and Silvershard Mine both have completely new objectives for players. Though they may not be completely original, since they are based off parts of other games, they are still a breathe of fresh air, in what was becoming a quite stale cycle of Battlegrounds.

What I enjoy the most about these new Battlegrounds are their simplicity. Though it is fun to have Battlegrounds like Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest with a lot of different objectives, I feel like WoW could use some more simple Battlegrounds. Both of these Battlegrounds are on small maps, allowing there to be the maximum amount of PvP action. Though they do have differnt objectives, one to control artifacts, the other to control mine carts they are also incredibly simple; the team the kills the other more effeciently wins. This is true about most battlegrounds, however it is way more present in these new ones.

Finally, I like the story behind these Battlegrounds, in particular Silvershard Mine. Battlegrounds always have some sort of story behind them. However, with most, they feel like a never ending battle of tug-of-war between the Horde and Alliance. Silvershard Mine, on the other hand, seems to be a bit more involved. At least for me, I feel like the battle is more important, since we are fighting for resources to help our faction’s war efforts in Pandaria. This seems more involved then, storm a beach to gain control of a Titan artifact, that is never used.

Though it is just my opinion, I like these new Battlegrounds. They are something new, in a world of bland Battlegrounds. But they are not ridiculously complex; allowing teams to win solely by the fact that they are better at killing then the other team. Lastly, the story, though important to most players, is very meaningful to me, atleast more so then most Battlegrounds. I definitely like the direction Blizzard went with these, and hopefully they continue making content like this.
