The Wii U marked the introduction of of the next generation of gaming consoles, so-to-speak, meaning that the future is now upon us and that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are reaching the end of their life cycles and that we’ll soon have shiny new consoles from both Microsoft and Sony with more power, more features and a whole slew of new games. So the question on the minds of a lot of gamers is; do I even bother with this current generation of game consoles anymore? I think the answer to that is a resounding “yes.” If you for some reason have missed out on any of the big three of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or the Wii, right now is a great time to dive in while the prices are low and there are holiday console bundles galore.
For me, my PlayStation 3 is less than two years old now, me waiting to pick one up until the prices had dropped from the insane launch prices, and there were a lot of the console’s earlier titles selling for around $20. It kind of felt like a no-brainer. Right now it should especially feel like a no-brainer, as retailers like Target are offering a 250gb PlayStation 3 bundle featuring the Uncharted Dual Pack and the Infamous Collection for just $199. Take into account that there are now a bunch of “Collections” for this generation’s games featuring multiple games from the same series selling for discounted prices.
As for the Xbox 360, I’m on my third, yes I said third Xbox 360, which is both a testament to how much I play it and how these things were initially not made to last. This second one was sadly no longer under warranty and I found myself needing a new hard drive as well as a new disc drive, so the math didn’t add up and a brand new $250 console just made sense. If you for some reason haven’t gotten one yet, these later models are a lot more reliable and there are a ton of games out there that have dropped in price. On top of a lot of the great exclusives that you might have missed, Xbox Live Arcade has a ton of games and there are always some great sales going on, meaning you can pick up some of the cooler games of the past few years for just a few bucks.
If you’ve missed out on the Wii, they are practically giving them away at $129.99 right now, and it includes both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. For the longest time those were the only two games that I had on the Wii because they were just that much fun. Since the Wii U has been released there have been some massive drops in price for the Wii as well as Wii games. I don’t think I need to tell you that there are some quality Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Metroid games to be purchased for the Wii as well as a whole slew of other quirky titles unlike you’ll find on the other two consoles.
So if you’ve missed out on anything from the current (or past, depending on how you look at it) generation of consoles, now seems to be the time to make a holiday purchase for yourself and get some quality time in with your new console along with really cheap, really awesome games that will keep you busy for a long, long time.
