While many think of New Jersey as simply a suburb of New York City, Jersey offers a wide variety of fun places to visit with activities to match. One of those destinations is the Jersey Shore.
Don’t Feed the Seagulls
Many Jersey Shore towns have boardwalks that parallel the ocean with shops, eateries and places to play. You can watch saltwater taffy being made, gobble up funnel cake, pizza or boardwalk fries and then grab some mini spoons to taste test ice cream, water ice or gelato. There are small amusement parks with everything from kiddie rides to daring roller coasters. Mini golf, bicycling, batting cages, basketball and soccer challenges, arcades and go-karting also offer opportunities for fun memories.
If you love the water but the ocean isn’t your thing, look for water parks along the best boardwalks in NJ. Most are open every day during the day and contain pools, multiple water slides and lazy places to just lay in the water and float. When you’re done, you can walk the boardwalk and count for yourself to find out if there really are more “don’t feed the seagulls” signs than there are t-shirt shops.
Water, Water Everywhere
With miles of coastline on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware River, you can choose practically any water-related fun to have. Even if your visit is limited to the Shore – as locals call it – you still have so much from which to choose. Ocean-side jet ski rentals, surfing, dolphin and whale watching tours, deep-sea fishing, power sailing and swimming in the Atlantic are fun water-based activities.
Don’t forget many communities back onto a bay. You can find several water-based bayside activities offered, too. Things like fishing, water skiing, paddle boarding and leisure boating are available at many of the marinas. Hanging out on the beach is fun, also, with things like kite flying, volleyball, seashell and wildlife hunting, sunbathing and sandcastle building available.
Your Favorite School Subjects
History and Science come alive at the Jersey Shore. The Nature Conservancy operates preserves and often runs classes. Cape May is a famous bird watching destination; don’t miss the bald eagles and ospreys. There are museums, lighthouse tours, animal preserves and zoos, Revolutionary war battle sites and restored Colonial villages. You can even climb inside Lucy the Elephant, Margate’s 65-foot statue, the oldest existing roadside tourist attraction in America.
If chemistry was your thing in school, consider visiting a microbrewery or winery. The tours explain the science of brewing beer or crafting wine in addition to offering tastings. Some breweries and wineries are affiliated with or even attached to local restaurants where you can sample tasty treats that pair nicely with your new favorite beverages.
Adults Play, Too
A big draw at the Jersey Shore is Atlantic City. Considered a premier tourist destination along the East Coast, Atlantic City is chock full of fun things to do. One of the obvious choices is to play and stay at one of the many casino hotels the city boasts. Gambling is a big draw, but so are the many fine restaurants and shops in each location. Most of the hotels themselves front the Atlantic City boardwalk. So if the ocean is your thing, you can step directly from the lobby to the boardwalk to the beach in minutes. Each hotel also books in entertainment acts like big name musicians and comedians. The smaller venues in the casino hotels offer fans a more intimate experience with their favorite artists.
The Jersey Shore is a fun-filled destination for the whole family with many options from which to choose. You’ll make great memories here, and who knows, maybe want to come back again!
