Dabbing Techniques – What Do They Mean?

Many people make the wrong assumption that dabbing only came to prominence on the dancefloor and on social media in the last few years. While the ‘dab’ may be a popular sports celebration, greeting amongst friends, or photo-opportunity to some, dabbing is taken a lot more seriously in the world of the herb.

Dabbing in this context has been around for many years, and the traditional methods of using dabs, AKA cannabis concentrates. In recent times the user numbers have grown dramatically thanks to the introduction of a more suitable (for some) technique of marijuana dabbing called ‘cold start.’ This can be used for all the usual popular strains such as Blue Dream, Wedding Cake, Sour Diesel, and OG Kush, among others but has sparked a cold start dab vs traditional methods debate. With this in mind, we decided to take a closer look at both dabbing techniques and how they best use the many varieties such as Sauce, Wax, Crumble and Shatter;

Cold Start Dabbing: Technique and Pointers

Cold start dabbing is a fairly new way of dabbing that has caught the eye recently. You will need a quartz banger and a carb cap in order to do a cold start dab.

  • The process begins by placing the dab into a clean cold banger or bucket instead of taking it straight away.
  • This is followed by carefully warming the banger for about 10 seconds after placing the carb cap on top, after a short while the vapourization will turn the dab into a pretty kind of oil for you to inhale.
  • You can do this as you would any other dab and then make use of any leftover oil in the bucket or banger after you are done by using it for your next hit.

The cold start dab is deliciously tasty and a lot smoother on the esophagus and this method of dabbing is more friendly on your respiratory system. The low temperature of the dab using this popular method really brings out the terpene profile of the concentrate, making for a tantalizing dabbing experience.

Traditional Dabbing: Method and Common Mistakes

First-timers and inexperienced users often fall into the trap of getting carried away and not knowing when to stop when first heating their nails or banger. The optimum temperature of around 550 degrees Fahrenheit is regularly surpassed, sometimes even doubled up to over 1000 degrees when these novices are overheating their buckets and quartz nails. If you a rookie or don’t really have the confidence to see this through properly you may be better served using an e-nail or electronic heating device to hold a precise temperature. It will save a lot of time and a lot of product too until you master the correct traditional technique involved.

When dabs are inhaled at searing temperatures, they tend to cause your throat and chest pain. This is simply because the smoke being inhaled is way too hot. Many of the essential cannabinoids and terpenes that you seek when consuming cannabis are instantly burned off in this process. Not only causing avoidable discomfort to the throat and lungs and wasting concentrates in the process.
