Humans quickly learn that life is full of surprises and to expect the unexpected. When life throws a curveball that dents any sign or form of hope, people tend to develop a few go-to strategies to help cope with a tough time, trauma, stressful peak, or adversity.

Nate Mell, a skilled craftsman who started and currently operates Felt+Fat, a Philadelphia-based ceramic design and manufacturing studio, says that those who want to prepare for life’s challenges must learn how to build resilience. He suggests that those wishing to enhance their capacity to maneuver more gracefully through challenging moments should keep in mind these tips:

Tip #1: Stay Positive

Maintaining a steady optimistic mindset during hard times is crucial when piecing together personal resilience. Having hope helps humans to remain confident for the future, which will mentally boost anyone during dark moments in life. Some people argue that optimism does not adequately address a situation at hand, but that is not true. Rather than harping on the negative, you allow yourself to focus on possible positive outcomes to better cope with what you are going through in life.

Tip #2: Identify A Purpose

A life without a purpose lacks meaning, and whenever complex scenarios arise, that lack of meaning in life can feel heavier than ever. Finding a purpose that suits you and sparks passion from within allows your life to feel like it has a significant meaning. With meaning in life follows positive outlooks and seeking goals. Once you find a purpose, start setting daily, weekly, and monthly mile markers to help keep you moving forward rather than harping on any negativity in the past. Establishing goals is a strategy resilient people use to view and handle problems in a realistic way.

Tip #3: Do Not Ignore Self-Care

Self-care should be number one on anyone’s list who is going through a challenging change. A person can foster wellness by eating healthy and nutritious foods, staying hydrated, getting regular exercise, and choosing to be mindful. Use meditation, prayer, yoga, or journaling to practice mindfulness and strengthen thought control. Taking care of your mental and physical well-being will better build resilience and prevent falling into bad habits or coping habits such as overeating junk food, drugs, alcohol, or any other temporary Band-Aid. Positive and self-love actions aid with stress adaptation and emotional toll.

Tip #4: Welcome Change

Life moves fast, whether we like it or not, and changes are bound to happen entirely out of our control. Since change is inevitable, it is healthier to welcome change with open arms and a perspective of acceptance rather than face it with denial and hate. Understanding that change is a part of life will assist with staying focused on productive activities that are within your control.

Tip #5: Connect with Others

In times of grief or struggle, it is comforting to know that we are not alone, which is why an excellent option to pursue is to connect with others you feel safe going to for support and help. When more than one person is affected by a traumatic event, healing together in a healthy manner can help build resilience when having to lean on each other rather than choosing a one-way street for only receiving support.
