Many people want to reduce the risk of cancer because they’ve had friends and family members get different forms of cancer. Their family may be more at risk of breast or colon cancer, and they want to lessen the chances that they will get it too. Cancer is caused primarily by external factors that when combined with your unique genetics can lead to sickness.

The unfortunate thing is that most people go about their lives without realizing that their choices can also lead to cancer. Here are 6 things you didn’t know could increase your cancer risk. The good news is that you can make small changes that have a big impact on your health over time.

Using Body Spray or Perfume

You might think all those bottles of spray from the mall smell amazing. And you’re right, they do. But these sprays are a toxic soup that can lead to anything from hormone disruption to cancer. Do you think second-hand smoke is bad? Try looking at the lungs of someone who sprays their home or body with the chemicals contained in perfume or body spray. People who use these products on their bodies and in their homes are at a greater risk of cancer than those who don’t.

Being Overweight

Having too much fat on your body can lead to diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions. Being overweight or obese is one of the risk factors for cancer as well. The imbalance of hormones that happens in some people often leads to cellular damage that can cause cancer. These cancers can range from breast cancer to stomach or even cancer in the reproductive organs of men and women. Reducing your cancer risk is another great reason to shed some extra pounds. Start by walking 15 minutes a day and making small shifts in your eating habits if you want to lose.

Enjoying Certain Meats

Not all meat is bad for you. Grass-fed beef for instance is one of the healthiest meats you can eat. But for those looking at reducing their cancer risk, processed meats are a no-go. The chemicals used to cure bacon, make sausage, and other lunch meats can cause damage to the stomach and intestines. This eventually puts people who eat a lot of this kind of meat at risk of various cancers. Some people choose to eliminate these dangerous meats altogether, while others choose to enjoy them on rare occasions.

Drinking Too Much Alcohol

Enjoying a beer or a glass of wine a couple of times a week is usually no big deal. Unfortunately, some people have a habit of consuming far more alcohol than their bodies need. This can lead to a multitude of issues including dependency, liver problems, and even a weakened immune system. Additionally, drinking too much alcohol, more than 2-3 servings a week can increase the risk of cancer tremendously. It’s best to only have a drink a few times a week and to avoid situations where you might be tempted to consume too much if you want to reduce your cancer risk.

Sitting Too Long

Sitting is associated with an increased risk of obesity, but it’s also not good for you because it’s also linked to an increased risk of cancer. The more you sit, the more you’re at risk of certain cancers. Breast cancer and colon cancer are more prevalent in people who sit for extended periods of time each day. There are ways to reduce your risk if you must sit at a desk for work. You can invest in a standing desk, or simply take your breaks standing up. Go for frequent walks during the day if you want to stay healthy and lower your risk of cancer. And look into getting a fit test if you think your colon is at risk.

Sipping on Hot Beverages

You probably like your coffee or tea scalding when you first get it. Who doesn’t? Lukewarm coffee or tea is not delicious, and we know you want to enjoy your latte bubbling and hot. Unfortunately, drinking hot beverages like this all the time can cause damage to your esophagus. This damage is associated with an increased risk of throat cancer, and you could inadvertently be putting yourself in danger.
