When people tend to think of American vacations, they might think of many different places. For instance, they could think of beach towns like Myrtle Beach, Wildwood, Daytona, or Ocean City. They might think of the snowy Appalachian mountains, Rockies, or icy New England. However, regardless of the time of year, many people do not think of Ohio as having any locations worthy of vacationing.

Many see Ohio and some neighboring states as a relaxation dead zone, but this just isn’t the case! With RV vacations resurging as another popular form of travel, there are many destinations across the state that might offer the beauty, relaxation, or fun that you expect for a traditional vacation. Here are some fun reasons why Ohio could make for a fantastic travel destination

It’s a Very Easy State To Travel Through

I recently drove through the state of Ohio, and it only took me about 3 ½ hours to get from one end of the state to the other. To be fair, I didn’t make any pit stops and I used the interstate, but the state is known for being as flat as a plate. This works in your favor if you are traveling, as you could see things on opposite ends of the state and make them day trips. Or, if you were RVing, it means you could hit everything in the state within a week or two, depending on how long you wanted to spend at each stop.

Amazing History Pieces

Ohio has some fantastic historical locations that are well worth the visit. To begin with, for true-crime and spooky story enthusiasts, the Ohio State Reformatory is a perfect stop. It was a film location for The Shawshank Redemption and has been the location for numerous reported hauntings and scares. If you have ever been to the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, it is similar, but really leans into the gothic and spooky vibes.

In addition, there is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Here, you could see all the names and bands that made rock into the genre it is today. There are even some cool locations where people have constructed castles or maintained coal towns in their original form from around the 1800s. Regardless of what your niche is, there’s something for you.

Natural Parks and Caverns

There are a slew of national parks, caverns, and other beauties sprinkled across the entire state. You’ll want to start with the beautiful Cleveland Zoo that offers over 183 acres of wildlife exhibits, from birds and lizards to mammals and creatures you have never seen before.

As you move your way across the state, you could stop at Salt Fork State Park, The Whispering Cave, or Zane Shawnee Caverns. All of these locations could make for an amazing day trip away from whatever hotel or small boutique you selected in Columbus, or a nice day’s activity after a short drive from some other location!

Lots of Fun for Kids

There are some big draws for Ohio for those with families! Cedar Rapids is probably the main one. This amazing amusement park has been around for decades and has grown and adapted, not only offering some of the classic rides they have been known for, but offering other new and exciting rides to their list.

In addition to Cedar Rapids, there is also a place called The Wilds, where you can go for a safari to see animals such as rhinos – all without having to leave the country. In short, there is plenty to keep the kids entertained during your stay.

Plenty of Fun for Adults, Too!

After the kids have been burned out at the amusement park or a day at the beach, there is still plenty to do for grown-ups! To begin with, there is a thriving nightlife in both Columbus and Cleveland, with plenty of places to go clubbing in the evening.

If you’re a more cultured individual you could also go for a tour of Cleveland’s Museum of Art, or if something a little more simple is to your liking, you could get in a little sports betting in Ohio by placing a few friendly wagers at the next Bengals game. No matter what you decide to do, though, you’ll be sure to love your stay right here in the Buckeye State!
