Is your backyard boring? Do your friends and family avoid spending time outside? Do you wish you had a better space to relax outside after work? Regardless of what it looks like now, your backyard has plenty of potential. If you’d like to create a backyard you can use for entertainment, fun, and relaxation, here’s how to make that happen.

 1. Work on your lighting

If you’d like to use your backyard at night, lighting will be important. You probably have a porch light, but that’s not the kind of lighting you need. Lighting isn’t just about making the area visible – it’s also about creating ambiance.

One of the best ways to create amazing lighting is to use LED light strips. You’ve probably seen them used indoors, but there are also outdoor LED tape strips designed to withstand outdoor conditions.

What’s cool about these LED strips is that, when placed just right, they create a long line of light that feels softer than a single-source of light, like a spotlight or a porch light. The softness creates adequate illumination, but also contributes to a relaxing atmosphere for your social gatherings.

2. Add an in-ground trampoline

If you have gatherings in your backyard where kids are present, you’ll want to have an in-ground trampoline. Trampolines are not only fun and entertaining, but they can help kids expend some of their endless energy and make them tired.

Traditionally, trampolines stand high above the ground and use nets to keep people from falling over the edge. Still, it’s not hard to become injured on a traditional trampoline, and that’s why people have been installing in-ground trampolines instead.

An in-ground trampoline is installed level with the ground. To install an in-ground trampoline, you’ll dig a hole large enough to accommodate the legs of your trampoline, and then place it inside the hole. The installation process is a bit more nuanced than that, but that’s the basic idea.

In-ground trampolines are much safer than above-ground trampolines. People can still fall if they jump wrong or trip over someone else’s foot, but they’ll already be level with the ground and it won’t be as hard of a fall. You can also install a safety net around the trampoline to prevent people from falling onto the harder ground.

 3. Get a poolside grill

Do you have people over for a swim, or a dip in the hot tub? If so, consider getting a poolside grill for your gatherings. Sure, you can cook inside or bring snacks out to the yard, but it’s more fun when you can grill by the side of the pool.

Having a poolside grill is fun because everyone can smell what’s cooking. Also, people can take turns cooking the food so the job doesn’t fall entirely on one person. You also don’t have to worry about people running in and out of the house, dripping water all over the floor just to get some food.

 4. Create a mini movie theater

People will definitely want to spend time in your backyard when they can watch movies out there. This will be more of an activity reserved for summer and fall, but it’s worth setting up so that it’s available when the time comes.

You don’t need much to create a movie theater in your backyard. You don’t have to make it fancy, either. All you need is a projector, a backdrop for your “screen,” some comfortable seating, and a selection of movies.

If you do create a theater, prioritize comfortable seating because that’s a deal-breaker for most people. Bean bag chairs make comfortable seating, but unless you have a lot of space in your garage, they can be hard to store. The ideal seating would be stackable chairs that you can gather up and stash away in a small area when the movie is over.

Don’t forget to have some kind of solid surface for snacks and drinks. If you can find chairs with built-in cup holders, that would be ideal.

5. Get a fire pit table

A fire pit table is ideal for eating dinner outside at night. Nothing beats having dinner in the presence of flames. There’s something magical about fire that makes people feel closer and more connected.

If you want to create a warm, open atmosphere for outdoor meals, a fire pit table will help you accomplish that easily.

Make your backyard amazing

Now you’ve got some ideas for how to transform your backyard into a fun space to gather. Whether you want to eat dinner outside under the stars, host a business party, or connect with friends and family, transforming your backyard will create an amazing experience for everyone.
