With summer temperatures set to soar as well as power bills, we’re all looking for ways to beat the heat without our wallets taking a beating at the same time.
Reducing power consumption with simple changes
You can reduce your power consumption by changing a few things around the house. For example, one of the biggest drains on energy are appliances on standby – TVs, hi-fi systems, computers, etc. By connecting these to a foot switch, you can turn on these appliances only when you need them, which can reduce power bills dramatically. If you use old-style halogen or CFL lights, consider switching out to LED lights, which use a fraction of the power (sometimes up to 90% less!) yet produce the same amount of lighting. You may also want to automate lights to come on at sundown and turn off at a certain time – which can be useful when you’re away on holidays.
Other ways to reduce power bills is to wash clothes with cold instead of hot water – which can take up 25% of your entire energy bill! – as well as filling up fridges or decreasing your thermostat on air conditioning by a few degrees. Other ways to save on power and energy is to only iron clothes that aren’t 100% dry, turning off lights when not in use, charging phones and laptops during off-peak tariff hours (if applicable), and make sure your ingredients are prepared before you turn on the stove. Though these seem insignificant in isolation, it all adds up.
Installing heat resistant blinds
Homes that are poorly insulated or have unshaded windows will heat up faster than homes that have awnings, roller blinds, or shutters installed. Keeping the heat out as much as possible is the aim during summer, so we don’t have to reach for the AC (or perhaps don’t even need it at all!) Shades and blinds that keep glare and UV out will keep heat out – and the initial cost may recoup itself in energy bill savings.
Compare energy retailers
If you haven’t looked at other energy retailers in your state or territory for at least a year or two, it’s worth using a comparison website to see if you can save money. Many power retailers will keep you on higher-than-average tariffs if you don’t seek out your own cheaper alternatives. It could save you a bundle, especially if you’re not interested in “benefits” and “rewards” – which you pay for with higher prices! Also remember to check if you are eligible for the seniors power rebate, which could further reduce bills.
Consider solar power
Though installing solar power systems and batteries has a significant upfront cost, the long-term economic and environmental benefits cannot be overlooked. Using solar can dramatically reduce power bills; or even pay for itself by feeding back electricity into the grid. You may not just save money on power bills but become energy independent – not relying on the grid at all.
With only a few key changes, you can experience lower power bills this summer while keeping cool too! You’ll be surprised how much you can save.
