The Cheltenham Gold Cup is considered one of the most prestigious and exciting events in the world of horse racing – and it has witnessed all sorts of memorable moments throughout its history. From thrilling  – and unforeseen victories to unexpected upsets, every single time it’s run, every single horse adds to the legend of this race.

As we take a dive into the history of the Cheltenham Gold Cup’s past, we take a look at the beautifully woven tapestry of triumphs and tribulations, wins and losses that have shaped its legacy.

Golden Miller

For everyone thinking about betting on the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the first thing they generally do is look for the favourites… specifically those horses that have won it more than once. And this applies to the first moment on our list which belongs to Golden Miller.

One of the most iconic moments dates back to 1924, when the legendary Golden Miller secured the first of his five consecutive Gold Cup victories. Trained by Basil Briscoe and ridden by Ted Leader, Golden Miller dominated the early years of the race, and his success remains unparalleled. His incredible feat will forever be written in the history books. He is a true racing great.

The Emergence of Arkle

Fast forward to the 1960s, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup saw the emergence of the world-famous Arkle. Considered by many to be one of the greatest steeplechasers of all time, Arkle won three consecutive victories from 1964 to 1966 – and he won the hearts of the nation.

Indeed, his dominance was such that the Irish sporting icon is now used as the yardstick by which all of the future Cheltenham Gold Cup champions are measured.

The Dawn of Dawn Run

In the 1980s, we were lucky enough to be introduced to Dawn Run, a mare whose incredible win in the 1986 Cheltenham Gold Cup was a historic moment. Trained by the legendary Paddy Mullins and ridden by Jonjo O’Neill, Dawn Run became the first – and remains the only mare to have ever won this revered race. Her legacy will always stay true – as a symbol of brilliance, tenacity and girl power.

The Best Mate of Cheltenham

The 1990s brought another magnificent moment – as we were first lucky enough to witness the brilliance of Best Mate. Trained by Henrietta Knight and ridden by Jim Culloty, Best Mate managed to win three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cup victories from 2002 to 2004. This incredible achievement earned him a place among the greats and made him beloved by all fans as a true Cheltenham legend.

A Kauto Star in the Making

The turn of the century also witnessed a hugely emotional triumph that resonated way beyond the racing community. In 2009, Kauto Star, guided by trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Ruby Walsh, achieved back-to-back victories, becoming a part of Gold Cup history. Kauto Star’s journey from his initial setbacks to ultimate glory was the perfect example of the resilience and spirit that have made the Cheltenham Gold Cup what it is today.

The Unpredictability of the Race

As the years have passed by, the unpredictability of the Cheltenham Gold Cup never fails to capture the imagination of its fans. The 2011 was the perfect example when Long Run, a young and exciting horse, outpaced some of the very best to secure victory. This was the perfect example of the ever-evolving nature of the sport, with new contenders ready to make their mark.

In recent years, the Cheltenham Gold Cup has seen some exciting duels – including the awesome battle between Native River and Might Bite in 2018. The resilience displayed by Native River added yet another layer of drama to the race.

So there you have it. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a whole history of triumphs, defeats, and an enduring spirit of competition and rivalry. From the never-forgotten Golden Miller to the impressive achievements of more recent horses such as Best Mate, Kauto Star, and Native River, each moment has left its mark on the race’s legend.
