Mad Max fans had to wait a long time between the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in 2024. The latest release from George Miller was supposed to reignite the franchise and lead to other spinoffs, but there’s a chance that those could be on hold now.

Mad Max has the potential to be a bustling modern franchise that spans films, television series, and games. For The Wasteland to be a box-office success, Warner Bros. Pictures may need to release a spinoff series first to foster a wider following.

Mad Max Franchise Has a Lot of Potential

Miller created a sprawling post-apocalyptic world in his Mad Max movies, and there’s endless potential for stories that could occur within it. This means that it’s possible to expand onto different platforms and mediums. There have already been a few great examples of Mad Max branching out, highlighting how it could be boosted in other ways.

There have already been a few video games, dating back to the first offering on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. These titles have been accompanied by comic books and novels as well. There’s also the Mad Max Fury Road slot game at 888casino, which is one of the top legal online casinos for Canadian players. It’s recommended for its welcome offer, along with the wide game selection. The Fury Road slot was so popular that it was followed up by a Megaways version recently, highlighting how there’s a huge audience for content from the franchise in the iGaming market.

Movie May Not Happen Due to Furiosa’s Poor Performance

Mad Max: The Wasteland was originally planned to follow Furiosa, but there’s talk that this may not be happening anymore. In a recent interview with Tom Hardy, the 46-year-old said that he didn’t believe the second Fury Road prequel was on the cards after the disappointing box-office returns of Furiosa.

Despite garnering positive reviews with critics lauding the performances of Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was a commercial flop. It only grossed $172.8 million against its $168 million budget, meaning that the studio is unlikely to take a gamble on another movie so soon after this failure.

Television Series May Be a Better Option

In the modern age of entertainment, television series are arguably ruling the roost. This is thanks to the rise of streaming services, and the fact that multi-episode offerings can include a lot more detail.

A Mad Max television series could give viewers a chance to get immersed in Miller’s chaotic world leaving them hungry for more content in other formats. Indeed, releasing this first could prime them for a new big-screen picture and give a movie a better chance of success at the box office. There have been some rumors that a series could happen, but nothing official yet.

Mad Max: The Wasteland was an exciting project that could have been an excellent follow-up to Furiosa. However, it’s unlikely that the studio will invest in it in the current climate. It would be best to expand the franchise in other ways first, and then release a new picture.
