With the new expansion for World of Warcraft less then two months away, players are eagerly waiting to see what new adventures await them in Pandaria. Along with these new adventures, players will be getting a new talent system filled with powerful choices for their characters. This new talent system drastically reduces the amount of points players get, yet each new talent is much more important to the characters gameplay However, it is still a big question whether the changes to talent system will be good for the game.

At a first glance, most of the new talents look like strictly PvP talents, which obviously makes PvPers happy. However, there is another aspect to the talent system that might be even more groundbreaking. It has been announced that in MoP players will be able to see what classes are on the opponents team before Arenas begins. It has also been said that players will be able to change talents before the match begins. This will add a whole new side of strategy to Arenas, as players will try to pick talents to counter the opposing team, while also trying to surprise them with unique combinations. This sort of new strategy will give Arenas a brand new feel, even to the most veteran Arena players.

On the other side of the spectrum, many PvE players are not as excited about this new talent system. They look at the talent system and they see many tiers were they are forced to pick a talent that they think that they will ever use, and looking at many of these talents they are right. However, the problem, I think, is not with the talent system, but with encounter design. If they have encounters were it is very helpful for players to have things like stuns, speed increases, defensive cooldowns, and other things usually reserved for PvPers, then this new talent system will work beautifully for PvE. Similar to PvP, it will add a whole new strategy to raiding, where groups will have to look at encounters and their raid composition and decided which talents will be the most helpful. If Blizzard implements future raid tiers in a way that players need to choose these “PvP” talents, then the new talent system will be a complete success.

Even though the talent system has been known about for a while, it is still a heavily debated topic. Many players, esspecially PvEers, feel like the talent system will give a lot of useless abilities. Yet some think that it will provide a whole new strategy to both sides of the game, since they will be able to change talents quickly before Arena matches and raid encounters, Like with most things however, we will not truly know how the new talent system works until it is introduced and players are able to try it out in the new content for MoP.
