This year at E3, I got the chance to play Disney Interactive’s Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes Edition. I tried out both of the first two new Marvel playsets that will be released later this year: an Avengers set; and the other a Spider-Man set featuring the cast members of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. The incorporating of Marvel Super Heroes into Disney Infinity is something I wanted to see in the game since it was first announced last year. I love the play style Disney Infinity brings to the table.

The demo for the Ultimate Spider-Man playset featured two different missions. Spider-Man, Nova, Iron Fist, Venom and Nick Fury are all playable characters. Other characters such as Power Man (Luke Cage) and White Tiger are in the game as NPCs so far. In one mission, the heroes have to escort a scientist around New York City to fix various relay stations and protect him from Venom sybmiote monsters. The other mission involves shadowing a nefarious OsCorp employee in a car. In The Avengers stories, you get to fight Frost Giants. For Spider-Man gameplay, web mechanics and controls worked very well. However, in the new Marvel playsets, I generally found melee combat to be a bit on the slow and rough side. Hopefully, this is something that will be smoothed out in time for launch. My personal favorite of the new Marvel figurines was Captain America, who has some fun shield-wielding attacks. All characters have an enhanced skill tree for upgrades to unlock attacks and abilities.

The game’s Toy Box mode has also received an upgrade for the 2.0 edition. Players will now be able to create and share their custom toy boxes. Another new tool for Toy Box mode is the Creator tool, which is basically a quick and easy way to build your custom world in Toy Box. The computer AI for the game basically builds everything from the ground up for you. I got to see this feature in action, and it looks like a great way to just dive right in for Toy Box mode instead of spending hours painstakingly making the world from scratch. It appears a ton of new vehicles, skies, costumes and gadgets from various Disney properties and Marvel lore will be at your fingertips. The two most amazing new power discs are also the most torturous. There is a new power disc for Darkwing Duck’s grappling hook and another for Darkwing Duck’s motorcycle, the Ratcatcher. Unfortunately, there is no Darkwing Duck in the game. However, the developers on hand at E3 appeared receptive to the idea of getting a playable Darkwing Duck figurine for the game, and they said they want him to be in the game.

The new enhanced Toy Box mode looks great so far. I really enjoy getting to play as the Marvel characters now and having them interact with other Disney characters. While characters like Falcon and Winter Soldier are not playable characters in the game, their character models do appear as assistant power discs for the Marvel heroes.

Disney Infinity 2.0 will be available later this Fall for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Windows PC and iOS. The starter pack, which includes the game, comes with three figurines, two Toy Box game discs, and one Web Mode card. Playsets, figures and power disc packs will also be sold separately. In addition, I was told by Disney Interactive representatives, that players who already own the 1.0 edition would be able to upgrade to 2.0 without having to buy the new game. And let’s not forget, a Guardians of the Galaxy playset is also due out for release as well.
