During the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con I got the chance to preview Skylanders: Trap Team, Toys for Bob’s latest installment in the mega-franchise. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game were previewed for hands-off demos only at the convention. The new installment looks incredibly fun and action-packed and appears to be a great game for kids and families to play together.

In the new game, the nefarious villain Kaos has destroyed the Cloudcracker Prison and unleashed the most dastardly villains in the land. The game features the Trap Masters as the heroes using a trap theme. The Trap Masters use Traptanium Traps to stop Kaos and the other unleashed villains. Kaos’ plot has caused shards of Traptanium to fill the Skylands.

Skylanders: Trap Team features a new Traptanium Portal toy. Using this, players will be able to trap villains. Once villains are trapped in the device, complete with some fun and unique audio coming from the Trap Portal toy, players can later unleash the villain and exploit that villain’s powers as an ally.

The developers at Comic-Con showcased a level with the Trap Master heroes fighting against a blob-like monster named the Gulper. The Gulper is obsessed with consuming sugary treats and soda to grow larger. The graphics for the new-gen consoles look incredibly lush and sharper than ever before. The level design, with the bubbly soda and purveying Traptanium, are imaginative and eye-popping.

Around mid-level, the Trap Team faces off with a sheep villain named Sheep Creep. After Sheep Creep is trapped, the developers demonstrated how you can use the trapped Sheep Creep later against other enemies. The boss fight for Gulper is massive. Gulper has grown to gigantic proportions. In the boss stage, the Trap Team must destroy Gulper’s soda supply in order to make him grow smaller and trap him.

Skylanders: Trap Team looks like another entertaining, compelling platform adventure. The way the developers have combined the use of toys and video games is rather ingenuous. The figurine and Trap Portal toy looks like a feature that kids will love. There is something really fun about seeing the villains get caught in the Trap Portal and then hearing that villain’s voice in the actual trap toy. Switching characters in-game with their unique figurines in the Skylanders figurine tray looks very quick and easy to do. The game features more than 50 playable Skylander characters. According to the developers, players will still be able to play game with their previous collection of 175 forward compatible characters from the SWAP Force, Giants and Spyro’s Adventure installments of the Skylanders franchise.

Skylanders Trap Team

Skylanders Trap Team is due out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS on October 5. The 3DS version will be a different, unique version of the game, developed by Beenox.
