Straight from Gamescom 2014, Ubisoft released a brand new gameplay video for Assassin’s Creed Unity, featuring new commentary by Creative Director Alex Amancio. The delectable video really showcases the capabilities of this installment of franchise for the next-gen consoles. The video features Amancio running through an assassin mission for the game’s protagonist, Arno, who is tasked with tracking down and eliminating a Templar minion, Sivert.
The missions take place in featured areas called Black Boxes. In a Black Box, the player is given a set objective and can uniquely accomplish the mission however the player wishes. The video takes a stealth approach for the assassin mission; but it looks like a direct approach, while highly dangerous, is still possible. The Black Box feature sounds similar, in a way, to what Monolith Productions is attempting with the Nemesis System for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Although these features sound and look nice, execution will be key. It will be interesting to see how the game rewards or perhaps punishes the player for unique approaches to missions. Does one beget more secrets than the other? According to Amancio, there are no actual linear pathways for the missions, so we shall see.
The video also provided another great look at one of the most exciting new additions to the franchise– dynamic descent. However, the game has not abandoned its roots, since the Leap of Faith into a haystack is still an available play option.
For the video, the really king feature is the splendorous in-game recreation of Paris’ Notre Dame. The detail of the cathedral looks immense. The interior appears to be fully realized and is teaming with activity. I love that the Notre Dame Cathedral is a central set-piece for the game and can be explored for missions. The video emphasized stealth gameplay and kills, which look more meticulous than ever.
The game did offer a couple of story tidbits. The video begins with a cutscene showing Arno’s apparent master assigning him his mission. The mentor’s lines conveniently set up the sequence for the video, advising Arno to figure the plan out, making the player a proxy for Arno. Arno’s dispatching of Sivert leads to an apparent flashback into Sivert’s memories with Sivert pursuing a subject called the “King of Beggars.” The sheer amount of detail and immersive gameplay in Assassin’s Creed Unity looks absolutely epic. Ubisoft appears to be taking full advantage of the franchise’s first trip to the next-gen consoles. Assassin’s Creed Unity is set for an October 28 release for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
