Konami released a new extended gameplay video for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The new video features an alternate gameplay approach for the outpost that Snake infiltrates to get the whereabouts of his captured comrade, Kaz Miller. In addition, the video provides the first look at the highly-anticipated multiplayer mode for the game.
The video features an alternate plan of attack for Big Boss to break into the enemy base in the desert. Apparently, when players return to the same area on a different play through, enemy patterns and guard concentration placement changes in certain areas. The enemies at a small little hut in a neighboring home are gone. In this particular sequence, Big Boss knocks out an enemy vehicle in an unconventional manner. Big Boss rides his horse to the middle of the road. The horse poops in the road, and somehow the poop is strong enough to cause a vehicle to skid, come to a dead stop in the road and briefly knock out the enemies. As humorous as this moment is, I have to say it is completely ridiculous, especially for the Metal Gear Solid franchise. I get that Kojima has somewhat of a wacky sense of humor, but to actually go through the mechanics of horse poop as a weapon…OK, whatever. The base is the same one that Big Boss infiltrated in the E3 first-look, behind-closed-doors demo.
In another silly moment from the video, Big Boss manages to trick an enemy guard by hiding in a cardboard box that has been altered, with a cutout of a hot girl on the front. This actually tricks the guard and gets the man all excited before Big Boss finally knocks him out. That is not as ridiculus as the horse poop as a weapon gag.
I did appreciate a few things from the video, especially the varied stealth attacks and the different ways Big Boss can sneak into the hut with the intel documents. Another awesome feature is the use of the Fulton device on an empty jeep to launch the jeep and take out the enemy chopper. The escape of Big Boss on horseback looks great as well.
The video also provided the first real look at the game’s multiplayer mode. Based on the video, this game’s attempt at multiplayer is a bit more strategic and different than anything previously done with multiplayer. It appears that each player will have his or her own version of Mother Base, led by Big Boss. As previously revealed, each player can build up and customize Mother Base. Other players can infiltrate your Mother Base, so players have to build up their security and defenses to protect their bases. In addition, Big Boss can go on a stealth mission to infiltrate other bases, steal their resources and apparently take out the other players. These features and ideas are very interesting. To some degree, they remind me of the online multiplayer features for Watch Dogs. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is due out next year for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
