There is a simple fact that no one can really deny. The marketing and advertising campaign around Destiny is pretty spectacular. Bungie and Activision know how to make some excellent ads for their games. Case in point: the new live-action Become Legend trailer for Destiny. It is probably the single greatest trailer to emerge from the marketing campaign for Destiny. One cannot help but watch the full two-minute trailer (available below) without getting incredibly jazzed, pumped and excited.
Just when I thought the marketing campaign was about to end, Activision and Bungie surpassed all my expectations with this trailer release. I was already excited to play the game, but this trailer put those emotions over-the-top. Become Legend is simply an awe-inspiring trailer, directed by noted filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. He previously helmed such features as Oblivion and TRON: Legacy. The trailer, coupled with Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” does its job to absolute perfection. Since I am now dying to play Destiny, the trailer obviously achieved the desired effect on me.
What I most enjoy about the trailer is its quick-witted sense of humor and fun. The Fireteam shown in the trailer are a wise-cracking, sarcastic bunch. It nicely feeds off the successful tone and style of big ticket hit movie of the summer, Guardians of the Galaxy. The action is impressive, quick and energetic. Even though the clip is short, the trailer still maintains and reflects the epic scope and size of the world of Destiny.
While I am not a fan of Hollywood’s practice of adapting major video game titles into games, this trailer almost makes me believe one could work for Destiny. At the very least, some type of web series in this style could work very well. It would be foolish to think Activision is not thinking about taking the properties in such a direction. The Information published an article saying that Activision is interested in setting up its own studio to produce films based on its properties. Considering Microsoft is making digital features and a TV show based on Halo, a franchise Bungie created, the possibility of Activision having an interest in taking Destiny in this direction, is not much of a stretch. Not only that, Activision does not have a problem getting big-name Hollywood talent attached to its game products. Case in point: Kevin Spacey working on the upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
So, well played Bungie. Become Legend is a game trailer of a lifetime. I hope the game lives up to it. Destiny hits the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9.
