Focus Interactive recently released the latest gameplay video for the new stealth/infiltration video game, Styx: Master of Shadows. Each new video makes me more intrigued and interested in this unique-looking title. What I like the most is that the main protagonist is a Goblin creature named Styx. Typically, Styx is the kind of creature dispatched by the heroes in similar-looking games. So, playing as a goblin character like Styx, who has a ton of awesome abilities, gives the title a certain allure.
The new video highlights many of Styx’s stealth abilities, his assassination techniques and some of his combat prowess. I love the verticality of the Tower Akenash environment and how that can assist Styx with taking out enemies. Styx can grab an unwitting enemy from a ledge and throw him to the ground below. The action will draw the attention of another guard, and Styx can promptly drop a hanging lumber on the unsuspecting prey. Based on the new video, Styx has some supernatural powers. He has a type of goblin-vision, similar to Detective Mode from Batman: Arkham Asylum or the Witcher Sense from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The stealth gameplay, along with the stealth kills and combat, make the game resemble Assassin’s Creed–but with more of a supernatural fantasy bent.
The Tower of Akenash environment looks massive and epic. The design of this massive structure looks almost endless. I really like how it is made of levels that all look different. It looks like the environment will be fun to explore. Watching the video, I like the sense that Styx can literally go just about anywhere in the environment. Since Styx is quite nimble, he can seemingly climb or hang from almost any structure, which also adds to my interest in the title. Styx’s freedom of movement and enhanced abilities look like some of the game’s most appealing features. According to a press release from Focus Interactive, players will be able to unlock even more abilities, skills, moves and weapons with six “talent trees” (skill trees).
I am also most intrigued about the aims and goals of a creature like Styx. Based on the official synopsis, Styx is among one of the first of the goblin race. He is infiltrating the Tower of Akenash to hide Tree, a source of Amber. Styx is out to steal the Amber for fortune but also to learn more about his true origins. Styx is far from the conventional hero for this type of title, so I am curious to learn what he is all about.
Styx is due out as a downloadable title for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC next month.
