Capcom recently released the first gameplay trailer (available below) for Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and it looks like the franchise is definitely returning to heavy survival horror. The new trailer looked dark, moody and atmospheric. I think this is a good turn for the franchise after the direction Resident Evil took with Resident Evil 6. Hopefully, it might be a sign of things to come for the style of Resident Evil 7.

The new trailer features Claire Redfield wearing a pantsuit at a fancy banquet. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse. Some black ops soldiers crash the party and apprehend Claire Redfield. One of the soldiers identifies her by name. Redfield is taken prisoner and mysteriously freed from a dilapidated and nightmarish facility. The trailer features a montage of quick clips of some monstrous creatures, horrific imagery, as well as some brief flashes of the character I assume is Moira Burton, Barry Burton’s daughter.

The new trailer definitely looks like a step in the right direction. The first Revelations was a good spin-off/offshoot of the main games. Playing Resident Evil: Revelations reminded me of the experience of the first game. I hope Revelations 2 achieves similar results. Plus, I am overjoyed that Claire Redfield is being brought back into the fold as a playable character. Claire has been gone from the games for way too long, and she has been vastly underused. Even in the first CG-animated Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Degeneration, Claire was poorly utilized. Most of the main action fell on Leon Kennedy.

This is really the first time Claire Redfield has been playable in a new canonical game in the franchise since Resident Evil: Code Veronica, which has been downright criminal. Back in the 1990s, Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica were other favorite gaming experiences of mine. I actually owned and played Code Veronica for the SEGA Dreamcast. Yes…that Dreamcast. It is still one of my favorite games ever. I will be curious to see how self-contained the story will be or if it will lead in to any of the major events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. One of the few story details available so far is that Revelations 2 is set between both RE 5 and RE 6. Regardless, it will be nice to see what Claire Redfield has been up to all this time.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is due out in early 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
