Deep Down: Tokyo Game Show Trailer Features Interesting New Footage

Sony PlayStation Japan and Capcom released a new trailer for Deep Down at the Tokyo Game Show. The trailer, which is available below, contains some interesting and intriguing new footage. All of the dialogue is in English, but the dialogue is very confusing. It features a narrator, who’s words are almost incomprehensible. I wonder if this was done on purpose or if it was a translation issue.

The scenario appears to be almost jacked from the world of Assassin’s Creed. The latest Deep Down trailer depicts the game’s future premise, set in the year 2094. Here, it looks like the game is set in first-person perspective. From there, it appears that the protagonist of Deep Down jacks into a virtual reality contraption similar to the Animus from Assassin’s Creed. This contraption appears to take the user back to a scenario set in the year 1494. The protagonist becomes some sort of knight who battles monsters and demons.

While I am very confused, the new TGS trailer has definitely piqued my interest. I have no idea where Capcom is going with the story. However, it seems interesting, yet a bit derivative of the Assassin’s Creed series. The dungeon crawler gameplay looks comparable to Dark Souls. Yoshinori Ono is working as a producer on the game, so I look forward to seeing what he comes up with here.

One thing that makes the game look very distinct as a dungeon crawler is a multiplayer aspect. Based on the new footage, there will be a mutliplayer element to this game. It appears that players or knights will have the ability to fight together against some of the game’s signature monstrosities. The multiplayer and co-op capabilities for Deep Down are other aspects that interest me.

More than anything, I really enjoyed the footage and design for the creatures. It appears there are all kinds of giant beasts to vanquish in this game. There is a giant, more traditional western-looking dragon. In addition, a giant behemoth with multiple arms looks part arachnid, part insect and part gorilla.

The voice-over narration, which is still oddly confusing, suggests some type of mystery. The protagonist character looks at the device and questions, “What is this? Some kind of virtual theme park? A movie promo?” It was a fun, little meta line. However, earlier in the trailer, the same protagonist trailer implied that the machine is part of his “job.” Before he goes on a new job, he has weird dreams; perhaps about adventures from 1494? Well, I look forward to learning more.

Deep Down is being developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The release date has not yet been announced.
