The Uncharted franchise is absolutely one of my favorite action-adventure game series. I avidly await the results of Uncharted 4, which will be hitting the PlayStation 4 next year. So far, details on the game have been rather slim. However, user misstalwyn on Tumblr revealed some images of concept art for Uncharted 4 from The Art of Naughty Dog art book. The images showcase some juicy, epic set pieces and locations for what is sure to be a potential epic swan song for the Uncharted franchise.

The new showcase showcases Nathan Drake and some others in wet suits on a motor raft in the ruins of a flooded city. Other images from the art book portray a shipwreck and ruins of the city submerged underwater. Another image depicts a lone Nathan Drake walking alone on the beach of a tropical island. Interestingly, the latter image matches the tone, and perhaps the location, from the Uncharted 4 reveal trailer released last June during the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

An adventure set piece for the game that takes Drake underwater to explore ruins or even have to use something like harpoon guns would be fantastic. In the previous games, underwater sequences are generally brief, but energetic exchanges. A fun, new addition for the actual gameplay would be a stage that would take Drake in the ruins of an underwater city or shipwreck.

Several years after his last adventure, retired fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, is forced back into the world of thieves. Now, with stakes of much more personal nature, Drake embarks on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. Drake’s greatest adventure will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.

Other details for the game are thin. Based on the June trailer and the new artwork shown at Naughty Dog 30th Anniversary Art Show, Drake looks more grey, older and grizzled. Judging from the officially released story details, Drake has been out of the game for quite some time. He is also on the hunt for a fabled pirate treasure. Perhaps that is where the sunken city ruins and shipwreck come in? Perhaps Drake is on the hunt for pirate treasure. It is likely that the trailer from November 2013, with the voice-over from Todd Stashwick, is obsolete. Apparently, Stashwick has left the project and his character is being recast. Not only that, Uncharted franchise veteran writer and director, Amy Hennig, left Naughty Dog earlier this year.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due out for release exclusively on the PlayStation 4 in 2015. The Art of Naughty Dog will be available on October 14.
