Network Crashes Reinforce Trepidation Toward Games Requiring an Always Online Connection

Destiny

After securing a good block of time to attempt getting to level 30 for my Guardian in Destiny, another play session was killed by yet another server and/or network crash. Bungie redirected to me to a link with a message stating that the PS4 and PS3 versions of the game were down. I have read about similar issues affecting the game when played on Xbox. The situation now represents my major fear and annoyance regarding online games that require an “always online” connection in order to play them.

Overall, I am not happy about the move that developers are making with the format. If a game does not have a mutliplayer or campaign that does not require an online connection, at least there is content on the disc that does not require a WiFi connection or connection to a server. I am disappointed with the hacker attacks, but I am also frustrated that the PSN and Destiny servers seem to be consistently vulnerable to attacks.

The network crashes that are a problem, and household internet is as well. The reason for my concern about games that require an online connection: A sudden loss in internet connectivity in your household kills your gameplay session. I have fairly reliable internet and digital cable service, but a service interruption did kill a play session on a Weekly Heroic, where I was doing well.

Generally, I am getting sick of network crashes, server crashes or loss in connectivity interrupting the flow of gameplay. I understand that some of these issues are unavoidable; but if games are going to move forward in the direction of titles such as Destiny or The Division, these issues must be addressed.  The issue has become repeatedly exasperating, especially in the last several weeks since Destiny launched. It is mind-numbing to get kicked out of an awesome session by a network error.

It is quite disheartening to finally make progress in a more difficult Strike in Destiny only for the gameplay session to die at the hands of a network crash or hacker attack. I have nothing against online games or shooters, but I remember the days when issues like this were not a problem. I do not know if there is a direct solution to the problem. However, it is nice to play games that will not suddenly kick you out if PSN or a network server drops. On to Skylanders and Alien: Isolation.

    1. Thanks for your feedback. It is becoming maddening that it is happening with an alarming regularity and it tends to happen when you are in the middle of a Strike or another mission.
