Capcom released a new Japanese trailer for the upcoming high definition remake of the original Resident Evil game (Biohazard in Japan). Needless to say, I am incredibly impressed with the HD remastering. The original Resident Evil is one of my favorite games of all time. It was the first game I bought for my original PlayStation 1 console, so I am ecstatic about how well the HD remake is shaping up.
Even though the upcoming HD remake is a tweaked version of the GameCube version from 2002, the game still looks fantastic. Backgrounds look great. The environments appear ultra-detailed and amazing. The textures and visuals look polished. I get the sense that a lot of pain-staking detail went into re-mastering the game for last-gen and new-gen consoles. I have never been more excited to re-experience a classic game. The dreaded Spencer Mansion, a classic landmark of gaming and the franchise, has never looked more terrifying. Even though the HD remake is an upgraded port of a game released almost 13 years ago, the visuals look brand new. With the 1080p visuals, it looks fantastic.
What really got me about the original Resident Evil was the purveying sense of dread. There was a grim foreboding tone throughout the game that really cut through to the player. The problem is that the franchise experienced was drifting away from its survival horror roots. Resident Evil 4 did a great job of livening things up and offering some interesting tweaks, but it still played like it belong with the Resident Evil franchise. After Resident Evil 6, it is refreshing to see the push back to the traditional roots of the franchise with Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and the Resident Evil HD Remake.
It is great to see the Wesker’s Report videos made it into the game. I remember getting the first Wesker’s Report on DVD as a GameStop giveaway some years ago, so I hope it is included for the US release.
The HD Resident Evil remake looks like a great way for longtime fans to re-experience a classic game. In addition, the new version will allow new players to discover one of the best survival horror titles ever conceived. Ultimately, I hope this release is a success because I would like to see a proper HD remake of Resident Evil 2.
The upcoming HD remake of the original Resident Evil is due out in early 2015 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
