Blizzard unveiled Overwatch, their new, upcoming first-person shooter game, this week. Along with the announcement of the title, two new trailers were revealed: a CG cinematic trailer and a gameplay trailer. So far, I really enjoy the look and style of the game. The footage has a whimsical, fun and imaginative tone, and. I am excited to see more of Overwatch.

Essentially, Overwatch looks like Blizzard’s take on comic book superheroes. It is a good move since comic book superheroes are all the rage in media these days. Warcraft is based on medieval fantasy. Starcraft is space-faring science fiction; or, specifically, science fantasy. Overwatch looks like a mash-up of sci-fi, fantasy and a traditional comic book superhero style. Viewing the cinematic trailer, available below, is like watching a six minute Marvel animated adventure or Pixar’s The Incredibles. In the cinematic trailer, two boys attend a museum dedicated to Overwatch, a force of international heroes that formed to protect the Earth. Soon, the boys’ jaunt through the museum is interrupted by a fight between two heroes and two villains. The armored gorilla Winston and Tracer of Overwatch face the evil Reaper and Widowmaker. In the trailer, it looks like Blizzard did its own take on the Marvel Universe with its own characters and the aspect of revolving around a first-person shooter. As a huge fan of superhero stories, the overall style of the game looks massively appeal to me.

The cinematic trailer definitely piqued my interest and provided a good taste of the world and characters for Overwatch. The gameplay trailer shows off some actual gameplay. Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer shooter. Hopefully, the game will be free-to-play. However, as far as I know, that news is not yet confirmed. According to Blizzard, the game is meant to be a very accessible, pick-up-and play title. The gameplay trailer features a nice variety of characters to choose from. Based on the villains, I will probably enjoy playing as Reaper the most. Since this is a multiplayer shooter, I do like the gameplay modes that have been announced so far: Payload, moving a delivery to an objective point; and Point Capture, basically a capture the flag mode.

So, mission accomplished. The early videos have definitely caught my attention. Generally, I am not a devoted fan of online, multiplayer first-person shooters. However, these videos have definitely made me want to take a closer look. It is exciting that Blizzard is trying something different. Beta testing for Overwatch is slated to begin in 2015.
