It took a little over two months, but a refined voice chatting system will be implemented into Destiny starting next week. Earlier this week, Bungie mapped out the new opt-in chat system. The chat system makes its debut for the game with the Destiny Update 1.0.3 on November 18. Players have been asking for an easier way to chat in-game for quite some time. Previously, players were only able to chat by adding friends and then joining a party or Fireteam.
A nice feature of the new chat system is that it allows players to chat through the game’s matchmaking play sessions. Before the new upcoming update, players were unable to chat with the randomly matched teammates for a Strike mission. That included the Strike Playlist sessions. Some play sessions were difficult because the Fireteam for a Strike mission had no way at all to communicate via chat after matchmaking. It made no sense. If it was a problem hearing other players talk, then add a simple mute function like other online multiplayer games. The new chat system appears to have a simple, optional feature to chat with players. The feature can be toggled on or off by hitting the D-pad. The option allows players to chat with Guardians on their Fireteam.
The other great thing about the new chat system: It can be utilized for multiplayer matches in the Crucible. So team members for Control, Skirmish or Salvage will have an optional way to chat with each other.
There are a good number of settings for team chatting, so players can tailor the feature to their specific preferences. Players can set the team chat option to tune into the chat channel manually. Also, players can switch the setting so they will be tuned into the chat channel automatically after a team is formed. Bungie has provided a decent number of various options for the chat feature. If players do not like the teammate that is chatting, there is a mute option. It is that simple.
Rather than criticize Bungie too highly for not incorporating the chat feature at launch, I prefer to express the positive aspects about the change. It’s a free tweak to the gameplay that will improve the overall gameplay experience. Next, how about matchmaking for Raids, Weekly Heroic Strikes and Nightfall Strikes? Also, a trading resources feature would be nice.
Destiny is out now for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. The first DLC expansion pack, The Dark Below, is due out on December 9.
