Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Studios have released the second part in the Batman Arkham Knight video series, Ace Chemicals Infiltration. The new trailer shows the game’s version of the Batmobile racing into action with some impressive, jaw-dropping visuals. A Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady rep told me that the footage in this particular trailer is “gameplay video.” However, I am skeptical about that. Fans and players can check out the video below and decide for themselves.
The video is the second of a three-part video series for Arkham Knight. Part two of the Ace Chemicals Infiltration trailer series continues from the end of the last video. Batman has decided to go back into the Ace Chemicals plant to free the facility from the clutches of the Scarecrow, the Arkham Knight and their minions. In the new video, Batman launches into his souped-up Batmobile, and he races the vehicle into battle. In the courtyard of the Ace Chemicals plant, the Batmobile faces off against some high-tech, unmanned drone tanks. That means there is no problem with Batman unleashing the full force of the Batmobile’s destructive ordinance against the drones. Batman has no trouble dispatching the drone tanks and setting them ablaze with a barrage of missiles.
The trailer does a great job showcasing the Batmobile in action, as well as its weaponry and abilities. However, I am still skeptical about Rocksteady’s assertion that the trailer showcases actual in-game footage. The visuals look incredible, but the they still look like pre-rendered CG visuals. Rocksteady previously revealed that the game will not have any pre-rendered in-game cutscenes. In fact, all the cutscenes for Arkham Knight are supposed to happen in-game, without any pre-rendered CG sequences. That was not the case with Arkham Asylum or Arkham City. Although the Rocksteady rep advised that the footage in this trailer is “gameplay video,” I am unconvinced because the video series is based on the behind-closed-doors hands-off preview I saw for the game at the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo. When Batman returned to battle against the drones, the footage did not look like this. It looked similar to the Batmobile footage that was depicted in the first Ace Chemicals Infiltration video.
The developers could be taking alternate angles of the footage that might not be available for the game for the console version. I realize that the next-gen consoles are extremely powerful. In many instances, I have been quite disappointed with the failure of games to live up to the so-called next-gen technology. Perhaps, Arkham Knight is a game that embraces the next-gen tech like few other games have done in the past. Still, I would like to know more before I fully believe that the footage is actually rendered in-game. If all of the footage is taken from in-game, this could be one of the best looking games of 2014.
Rocksteady will debut the third Ace Chemicals Infiltration video during PlayStation Experience this weekend. Batman: Arkham Knight hits the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC on June 2.
