The latest trailer for Evolve, the upcoming first-person, co-op shooter, focuses heavily on the story scenario for the game. It appears that the game will have a story component. It is great that the game will have a story to go along with the action. Until recently, story details for the game have been sparse. The new story trailer does a good job of shedding light on what players can expect for the game’s story scenario.

Per the trailer description, 12 elite hunters have been dispatched to hunt monsters. The trailer shows the hunters gathering and getting briefed about the monsters by their commander. Apparently, the hunters have been charged with hunting down the gigantic alien monsters in the game. The monsters are attacking “the most valuable colony in the Far Arm.” The hunters must hunt the monsters and assist in a planet-wide evacuation of the colony. The reason the colony is valuable is unknown. Perhaps, one potential outcome is that the human colony is a mining operation that has disturbed or unearthed the violent and aggressive monsters in the game.

Since players are allowed to take control of the monsters, it would add even more intrigue if the monsters are simply fighting for self-preservation to protect their homes that have been encroached on by humans However, the hunters arguably have a noble goal as well; that is to protect the human colony from rampaging beasts who are running amok.

The visuals for the new trailer look like a mix of actual gameplay video and pre-rendered CG cinematics. A good deal of the footage could have been created in-game, but the storyline sequences appear to be much like pre-rendered CG cinematics. Regardless, the visuals look fantastic. I love the monster and alien creature designs. Evolve takes place in a universe that looks grimy and dark. It does not look like a really clean, static and bright vision of science fiction such as Star Trek. The hunters look like a ragtag group. The monster hunters somewhat resemble futuristic, science fiction versions of western cowboys or bounty hunters. Another strong attribute is that the hunters constitute a diverse group of men and women. However, it will be interesting to see whether players will be able to customize their hunter characters in the game.

Evolve is due out on February 10, 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The game is now available for pre-order.
