One of the great things about multiplayer online battle arena video game, Infinite Crisis, is the great job by Warner Bros. Interactive in giving comic fans and players a strong variety of playable characters. Previously, the game added Starro the Starfish. Now, longtime character Swamp Thing is set to join the character roster for the game. Swamp Thing is a classic character, and he is a fantastic addition to the game. In addition, Warner Bros. Interactive released a trailer showcasing Swamp Thing’s abilities and attributes in the game (available below).

Swamp Thing was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The character made his first appearance in the pages of House of Secrets Issue No. 92 in July 1971. For the purpose of the Infinite Crisis game, Swamp Thing is getting the backstory as an actual plant swamp creature, instead of the persona of Alec Holland. Holland was a biochemist who was developing a “bio-restorative formula” to solve food shortage issues. Thugs wanted the formula for a rival company and they caused an explosion in Holland’s lab. The explosion caused chemicals to be seeped with Holland’s formula. The formula gave birth to Swamp Thing, who possesses the memories of Alec Holland. Over the course of many years, Swamp Thing apparently believed he was Alec Holland, before learning he was actually one in a long line of elemental protectors summoned by the Parliament of Trees. The Parliament of Trees is a group of sentient plants. Holland’s backstory has been altered and changed over the years. Swamp Thing was resurrected after the events of the Blackest Night story. Acclaimed writer Alan Moore wrote one of the more celebrated runs of the character in the comics.

Swamp Thing has always been a favorite of mine, and I am ecstatic he is a playable character in a video game. It makes sense that the Swamp Thing character in the game has regenerative healing powers. In addition, he can capture and ensnare enemies with his vine attacks. The new redesign of Swamp Thing is interesting. Perhaps the designers went a little too overboard with the enlarged leaves and branches protruding from his back. However, his warrior king transformation ability looks impressive.

Swamp Thing will be available to players for Infinite Crisis starting on Wednesday, December 17. Infinite Crisis is now available a free-to-play game online at InfiniteCrisis.com.
