During PlayStation Experience, Capcom had a playable PlayStation 4 demo on hand for the upcoming latest installment of the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Revelations 2. I am very excited about the format Capcom is going with here. The game will be a weekly episodic digital title. Not to mention, the game appears to be a return to form for the franchise with a return to the survival horror roots of the series.

Details on the plot are still slim, but the features the return of Claire Redfield, reappearing in a major role for the franchise. The new demo contains a bit of a chunk for the game with Claire. Also playable in the game is Barry Burton’s young adult daughter, Moira Burton. At the start of the demo, Claire and Moira are apparently at some sort of company gathering for TerraSave, where they both work. However, all hell has broken loose, and the two women are taken prisoner. When the demo picks up, Claire and Moira are investigating their surroundings and looking for some keys to get out of the dilapidated facility where they are trapped. Claire has a strange electronic bracelet attached to her wrist. After the search, Claire and Moira locate a dead body of a guard. Claire confiscates his sidearm and gear belt. The gameplay calls for players to switch between Claire and Moira. Moira’s character opts against using a gun, due to some tragedy in her past. Claire gets a crowbar for Moira to use. Moira uses her flashlight to spot and locate items for Claire. In addition, she uses her crowbar to pry open locked doors.

Eventually, the pair is attacked by what appears to be the game’s version of zombies in the Afflicted. The Afflicted are quite formidable and agile. They can jump and actually grab Claire when she is trying to climb a ladder. Fortunately, the Afflicted are still susceptible to gunfire. A shotgun can be found and used on the Afflicted in the demo. Later, Claire and Moira find the keys and go to another area of the facility that appears to be a prison. A cut scene then starts, showing that Claire and Moira are under surveillance. They hear the voice of a woman, likely the game’s main antagonist. She taunts Claire and Moira, who are trapped in a sick experiment. The motives and goals of the villainess are not clear.

The play style is evocative of the first Resident Evil Revelations. The demo is rather short, but it definitely has a classic, trademark moody atmosphere of the Resident Evil franchise. I am looking forward to checking out more of the game. The first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 is due out February 17, 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita and Windows PC.
