During the 2014 PlayStation Experience, I got the chance to play the awesome little indie title, Broforce. Broforce is a classic, nostalgic side-scrolling, action-adventure platform game. So far, the game has been available to play for early access. The first time I actually got to pick up and play the game was at Playstation Experience. I was instantly intrigued when I saw some videos of the game online. The play style appeals to my sensibilities. The demo I played at PSX was the PS4 version. I love old school action video games, and Broforce is a simple and fun-to-play run and gun platform game. The game features simple, old-school, arcade-style graphics and pixel animation. Broforce is a refreshing throwback game that kids of the 1980s should absolutely love to play.
The overall shooting and combat style reminds me a lot of the Metal Slug series. The game contains lots of explosion and exaggerated over-the-top animation. There is blood, but the game features cartoony, pixel characters that are blowing up. The game has very small, traditional pixelated sprites as the character models. However, the character models, or “Bros” as they are called in the game, resemble 1980s and 1990s action movie heroes. I do not know how the game got away with using the likenesses of characters like Die Hard’s John McClane, RoboCop, Judge Dredd, John Rambo from Rambo, and many more, but I was told it falls under parody law protection. So, I guess it is OK. However, each character has his own special weapon or ability. The MacGyver character for example tosses dynamite. The Blade/Wesley Snipes parody character has a sword.
The controls are very tight and responsive. However, it is also very easy for your character to die in the game, so players must be careful and not try to button mash and shoot everything in sight on the screen. The game is very satisfying in that players can really just mow down an area filled with bad guys and cause lots of explosions and mayhem. The game is great for two-player co-op and works even better to play the game with a friend. The gameplay and combat is simplistic, but very effective. Action movie fans can pick up this great game and have an absolute blast with it.
Free Live Games’ Broforce is now available for early access play. The game will be available from Devolver Digital for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Windows PC and OS X later in 2015.
