Destiny is a game that is not without its flaws. The game was one of the biggest releases of the year, and it had a ton of hype for quite some time. I believe Destiny is a good, playable game that did not quite live up to the hype. A lot of flaws at launch were apparent. However, since the game is in many ways like a massive multiplayer online game, the video game is ever evolving and changing. Thankfully, with the release of the game’s first downloadable content expansion, The Dark Below, and new update patches, the game is starting to see significant improvements in gameplay. There are still some noticeable issues, but the improvements that have been made are a benefit to the overall gameplay.
For starters, loot drops have gotten much better since the launch of the DLC. The higher level Strike missions for the Strike Playlist are producing much stronger results. I have consistently eplayed the Vanguard ROC Strike missions for the Strike Playlist, and the rewards have been much better than usual. Out of playing the Vanguard ROC missions three times, I received Legendary gauntlets, a Legendary hand cannon and even an Exotic shotgun — the 4th Horseman. Underwhelming loot drops was previously one of my biggest problems with the game. I was pleasantly surprised to see gameplay on the Strikes yield some more preferable results instead of a consistent stream of obsolete pieces of gear.
The Tower vendors selling resources in exchange for Crucible or Vanguard marks has been a major help. Farming for resources and materials is my least favorite activity in Destiny. Just having the upgrade materials on sale at the vendors has taken a lot of the stress out of farming for hours on end to get resources. I would much rather play for marks in the Crucible or the Strike Playlist because that is a more productive activity in terms of leveling up character and gear stats.
The new available quests and gear are another major benefit to the overall gameplay. The new gear has been very helpful for Crucible gameplay sessions. Previously, my Titan has come off as very over-matched by other players in Crucible. Even at level 29, my Titan can hold his own with the new, more powerful weapons released in The Dark Below expansion. The Murmur fusion rifle has been a tremendous weapon for Crucible play.
The changes are symbolic of Bungie listening to fans and willing to make changes. I would like to see that continue over the course of the life of the game. Destiny along with the new expansion, The Dark Below, is currently available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. The next downloadable expansion, The House of Wolves, is due out in 2015.
