Recently, Techland debuted some new gameplay videos showcasing the co-op and multiplayer modes for the upcoming first-person, zombie survival horror game Dying Light. Besides what looks to be a massive, open-world single-player campaign, the game also has co-op play and a competitive asymmetric multiplayer game mode called Be the Zombie Mode. I am happy to see that these additional modes will be a part of the game. Both gameplay modes look to add a nice amount of depth to the game and a fun twist on these types of zombie first-person shooters.

The Be the Zombie multiplayer mode is an asymmetric competitive multiplayer mode. One player gets to control a Night Hunter, an ultimate zombie mutation. The other players are survivors attempting to hunt down the Night Hunter. Playing as the Night Hunter zombie is almost like getting to play as a video game boss-like monster in the upcoming Evolve video game. This type of multiplayer mode is a fun diversion and twist from the typical team vs. team or player vs. player death match for video games. Playing as the Night Hunter is almost like playing as a xenomorph creature from the Alien franchise or a Predator from the Predator movies. The craziest thing is that the Night Hunter has grappling tentacles it can use to easily travel across buildings like Spider-Man.

Co-op was one of the gameplay elements that Techland pulled off very well for the Dead Island franchise. With that in mind, I am happy to see Dying Light incorporate co-op play. In the co-op video, I really enjoy how players will be able to work in tandem. One player can push off a gasoline tank into a horde of unsuspecting zombies or combatants. Another player can ignite the tank and set it ablaze. It appears the co-op and multiplayer modes will offer a fun variety of replay value for the game. The co-op missions appear to be in a similar opt-in/opt-out format to Far Cry 4.

Dying Light is due out on January 27 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in North America. The game will be available as a digital-only release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 28 in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. The disc release of the game will be available in those territories on February 27. The Be the Zombie multiplayer mode will be available as downloadable content for free on all platforms in all territories.
