NetherRealm Studios has announced that another classic Kombatant character is joining the fighter roster for Mortal Kombat X in the form of the scaly, lizard-like Reptile. A new trailer featuring reptile (also below) was released earlier this week showing his new character design. The addition and announcement of another classic character for the game is definitely fantastic.
So far, Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have focused on drawing in players by marketing the classic characters. The game is set to feature around 12 classic characters and 12 new characters at launch. So far, nine classic characters have been revealed for the game. However, one of those characters is Goro, who is a pre-order bonus character, so he may not count. So far, the only new characters who have been revealed include: Cassie Cage, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade; the combination duo of Ferra and Torr, who count together as one; Kotal Kahn, likely the successor of Shao Kahn; and finally, the bug woman, D’Vorah. I certainly do not mind the focus on the classic, returning characters for the game. It has certainly been exciting to see the returning characters in action with some tweaked new designs.
I like the mash-up style of Reptile’s new design. Reptile is a classic character who first appeared as a hidden boss for the original Mortal Kombat. However, his design was a mere color palette swap of the Scorpion character from golden yellow to green. Reptile gradually became a more scaly, reptilian character. His new design because it clearly depicts Reptile as a humanoid, reptile hybrid. However, there are still design elements that pay homage to Reptile as a palette swap for Scorpion. His mask is reminiscent of Scorpion’s type of cowl. Reptile’s vest/tunic also resembles and has a similar shape to Scorpion’s outer garb.
As a fan of the classic original Mortal Kombat games, especially Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II, it is great to see the utilization of a classic character. It gives the game a more retro feel. A large part of Mortal Kombat 9’s success resulted from taking the game back to its 2D fighting game roots. So, the new game is continuing to bring back a lot of the classic, well-known characters. Considering that Reptile is a classic character who has roots in the first game, it is fantastic to see him back. It will be interesting to see who else returns for the returning character roster.
Mortal Kombat’s release is right around the corner. The game hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC on April 14.
