NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive recently confirmed yet another returning character for the upcoming Mortal Kombat X sequel. Ermac is slated to join the roster as one of the returning classic characters. So last week, NetherRealm Studios announced the return of two classic characters for the new game–Ermac and Reptile. I certainly was not expecting another returning character announcement for the game so soon after Reptile. It was definitely a welcome announcement. This is another great add for the game and the franchise. The recent reveal video for Ermac contains some very exciting, new footage.

I really enjoy Ermac’s new, updated character design. His earlier designs were basically another color palette swap for Scorpion. Ermac was essentially a ninja, but he now looks like a proper necromancer and sorcerer. His new appearance is more like a dark wizard than a ninja, which makes a lot more sense for Ermac, especially considering his powers, variations and movesets.

One of the most shocking and interesting reveals from the Ermac reveal video is that Ermac is currently in control of the soul of the dead Shao Kahn. Ermac was one of the few classic characters who actually survived the events of Mortal Kombat 9. So now, Ermac has Kahn’s soul; and apparently he wants to become the new ruler of Outworld, a position currently held by Kotal Kahn. That is a very interesting plot element. Hopefully, it means that Ermac will step up with a larger role in the story. However, since Ermac is a sorcerer and necromancer in possession of Shao Kahn’s soul, it makes one wonder how his goals might conflict with another villain, Quan Chi. Would the two consider some type of unholy alliance to further their goals? I am curious to see the direction in which the creative team takes the story.

A good number of classic characters are returning for the new game, which is great. However, now I am even more curious and excited about the 12 new characters who will be introduced. So far, only a few of the new characters have been revealed for Mortal Kombat X. So, there are still a good number of new characters that will soon be revealed.

Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
