Rise of the Tomb Raider: Siberia is an Exciting New Location

Game Informer recently released some new coverage and information on the upcoming sequel to the hit reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider. The new screenshots and information that were revealed and teased look very exciting. One of the most exciting new aspects of the game is the location. In the new game, Lara Croft will travel to the icy wilderness of Siberia. Siberia is a great new location for the game and it provides something that has not really been explored in the more modern Tomb Raider games.

The concept artwork and screenshots look quite amazing. Crystal Dynamics did very well in its gritty and realistic take of the property. The new images definitely look like Crystal Dynamics is sticking to that sensibility. Lara Croft is forced to survive a deadly, rough and mountainous terrain and it looks very cool. One piece of concept artwork shows Lara facing off with an angry and large bear, which would make for a great set-piece for the video game. The cold and wintry Siberia location adds to the darker and more serious tone of the new games.

It will be interesting to see how the events of Tomb Raider have affected Lara Croft. Based on the announcement trailer, she has been going to therapy and is possibly even suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following the events of the last game. Perhaps adventure seeking is Lara Croft’s new coping mechanism; or perhaps it is even an addiction? That was just a spitball idea. Based on a description from Game Informer, she is looking for the lost secrets of immortality and stumbles upon a secret society. Well, that definitely sounds like it is in the wheelhouse of the tradition of the Tomb Raider franchise.

Another screenshot shows Lara in full climbing gear with mountain climbing equipment. I am curious to see if rock climbing will be an incorporated function of the game. If that is the case, it will be exciting to see how Crystal Dynamic might implement it. The franchise going next-gen creates many interesting possibilities for the game.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is due out later this year for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. The game has previously been reported to be a timed exclusive. It does not seem that a release for the game will happen for the PlayStation consoles, but it has not yet been officially ruled out.
