I have a keen interest in the upcoming survival horror game Until Dawn. The game is exclusive to the PlayStation 4. Developer Supermassive Games and Sony PlayStation recently released a new trailer for Until Dawn (available below). The trailer conveys an extremely moody and atmospheric vibe. I am definitely enjoying the direction that Supermassive Games is taking with Until Dawn.

The trailer sets up a basic stock horror movie plot. A group of eight friends travels to a remote cabin in the woods for a vacation. Some of the characters are ready to get busy and romantic. However, behind the idyllic setting lurks a psycho killer who is ready to ruin the party for everyone. The trailer does a great job of setting the horrific scene for the film. This is a survival horror video game with a lot of cinematic panache.

The new footage was interesting due to the focus on relationships among the characters. The gameplay will be based on decisions and relationships built throughout the game. When I played the demo for Until Dawn at the 2014 PlayStation Experience, the developers gave me the impression that the game will allow players to play as the entire cast of characters. An excellent feature involves the ability to take multiple pathways, meaning that each time the game is played, players get a unique experience. That could create for a lot of fun replay value.

I am enjoying the game’s horror movie, cinematic style. Actors whom I am familiar with and enjoy have lent their voices and likenesses to the game. I did not realize that actor Bret Dalton, who plays Grant Ward on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., was in the game as one of the main characters. Movie star Hayden Panettiere is lending her voice and likeness to another main character, which is cool. Even though Until Dawn seems to have somewhat of a stock horror plot, the style looks rather natural and realistic.

However, there is something scary, creepy and unsettling underneath the idyllic romance of the footage.  The romantic images of the trailer are later interspersed with some quick, almost subliminal shots of the killer going after his hapless victims. The ending almost makes one believe that the bespectacled male character could be the killer. However, it would be more interesting if in the actual game, the identity of the killer could change depending on the choices the player makes.

Until Dawn is due out in Summer 2015. The game will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4.
