Bethesda Softworks and Tango Gameworks finally delivered the first official trailer video for the first downloadable content expansion for The Evil Within. The new trailer for The Assignment includes some of the more story-related content I have been wanting to see for the game. The new footage is encouraging. The Evil Within delivered a fun, survival-horror video game experience that had great atmosphere and ambiance. The score was good, but the story fell a little flat. In addition, a ton of questions remained unanswered. However, The Assignment trailer looks promising, and I hope the expansion provides answers to the lingering questions in the story.

The organization of Juli Kidman is revealed in the trailer. It is called Mobius. The organization is referenced, but never really named, in the actual game. However, in an Easter egg, Sebastian locates a jacket with a Mobius pin. Mobius is the nefarious organization that is responsible for all the events in the game. In short, there is nothing good or nice about Mobius. However, the similarities between Mobius and Umbrella Corp. of the Resident Evil franchise are too difficult to ignore. There are striking similarities between Ada Wong from Resident Evil and Juli Kidman from The Evil Within.

Hopefully, The Assignment and The Consequence DLC expansions will provide a much fuller backstory for the game. The story for these DLC will be concurrent with the events of the main game. Basically, the DLC is the equivalent of the Separate Ways scenario for Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4. One slightly annoying aspect is that players never had to pay extra for the Separate Ways DLC with Resident Evil 4. It could be unlocked by beating the game. For The Evil Within, players have to pay extra to get the rest of the story, while the actual game is full of plot holes. That said, it looks like the plot holes could be addressed starting with The Assignment, so that is somewhat encouraging.

The footage shows some Mobius operatives injecting Juli Kidman and preparing her for STEM experiment from the main campaign. One of the higher-ups asks, “Will you stand with Mobius?” Kidman pledges her loyalty to the organization by saying, “I’ve made my choice.” She is charged with retrieving Leslie Withers for Mobius. Mobius and Leslie Withers’ mental abilities are key to Mobius’ operation. It is clear that there is nothing positive about Mobius. Text logs throughout the game suggest that Mobius was responsible for the deaths of Sebastian Castellanos’ family member.

In conclusion, I look forward to seeing what The Assignment has to offer. Hopefully, the new story content will offer a fuller picture of the lore for The Evil Within. The Assignment DLC will be available on March 10.
