NetherRealm Studios finally released a look at the story mode for the highly anticipating fighting game sequel, Mortal Kombat X. I have been very curious about the direction of the story mode for the game, and it looks to be an epic, action-adventure thrill ride. The latest trailer offers a ton of exciting content and is really getting me pumped for the game.

The story mode for Mortal Kombat 9 was definitely one of the high points of the game. NetherRealm Studios provided a fun look back at the classic Mortal Kombat games. Mortal Kombat 9 offered a fun alternate re-telling of the events of Mortal Kombat 1-3 through a new modern, lens. However, the story left things in a rather grim place. Most of the favorite classic characters of the franchise are now dead. In a sense, Mortal Kombat X feels like a fresh start. The story mode iintroduces a lot of new characters and mixes in old ones. Some fans might be opposed to the focus on the new cast, but I am excited to see what the new characters can do.

The story takes place 25 years after the events of Mortal Kombat 9. The new main characters are the descendants or children of previous Mortal Kombat heroes. I have been a bit anxious about the lack of news for the cast of new characters that are expected to be introduced in the new game. Well, Mortal Kombat X finally showed three more right off the bat: Takashi Takeda, the son of Kenshi; Jacqueline Briggs, the daughter of Jax; and Kung Jin, the descendant of Kung Lao. Cassandra “Cassie” Cage, the daughter of classic franchise characters Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, appears to be leading this ragtag group of heroes to defend Earth. This is a bit of speculation, but it appears that Earthrealm is caught in the middle of a conflict between Mileena and Kotal Kahn.

The trailer also features some appearances of a number of classic and new characters who are not yet confirmed as playable. Queen Sindel was in the mix. I have no idea if this means she will be playable. Quan Chi has the power to control undead revenants, and Sindel could simply be one of them. However, the new character, Erron Black, introduced in a prequel comic book, appears in the new trailer. It seems silly to introduce that character in the comic, build a whole character model and not make him playable. Mileena and Shinnok are both depicted in the trailer, but they are not confirmed as playable characters. Based on the content of Mileena’s cutscene, it is entirely possible that she is a part of the roster. There was another character in purple garb who is rumored to be Rain. The shot of this character was fleeting, but it seems like it could be Rain. Finally, a character who appeared to be Barka, or a member of his race, is also in there.

The new trailer definitely raises the excitement level for the game. It appears that NetherRealm Studios will definitely maintain its streak that begain with Mortal Kombat 9. The game hits the shelves on April 14.
