Is Darksiders 2: Definitive Edition the Franchise’s Last Chance?

Recently, Gamespot confirmed that a recent leaked product listing for a remastered version of Darksiders 2 for the PlayStation 4 is legitimate. Apparently, Darksiders 2: Definitive Edition is real. Unfortunately, the franchise has been in limbo since the bankruptcy and dissolution of game franchise’s publisher, THQ, in 2013. Nordic Games picked up the Darksiders franchise intellectual property. It has been dormant since this recent news. The franchise was created and developed by the currently defunct Vigil Games. After that company dissolved, the founders got together to form a new development company called Airship Syndicate. Airship Syndicate is currently developing a video game based on Battle Chasers, a comic series that also came from Darksiders creator Joe Madureira. At the very least, I am happy to see something happening with Darksiders. But I wonder if the Definitive Edition for Darksiders 2 could be the franchise’s last shot at life.

Darksiders was somewhat of a sleeper hit game when it came out in 2010. Darksiders 2 sold well, but did not have huge sales. Hopefully, interest in Darksiders is sufficient enough to potentially revive some interest in the franchise when Nordic releases the Definitive Edition of Darksiders 2. Ultimately, I want to see the Definitive Edition make a nice sales dent. From there, perhaps Nordic Games would consider green lighting a new Darksiders project. Ultimately, money talks. If a next-gen remaster of Darksiders 2 does well, maybe at least a next-gen remaster for the first Darksiders game could be produced. Ideally, Darksiders 3 is what should happen. One imagines that Nordic Games will examine sales and enthusiasm for the Definitive Edition and make a decision after that.

Darksiders is such an amazing, underrated series, and Nordic Games should develop the property. The franchise has an intriguing storyline, interesting characters, intriguing political conflicts and a fun style that mashes up the hack-and-slash action-adventure gameplay of God of War with RPG dungeon crawler games. Darksiders 2 left the entire story in somewhat of an uncertain state. The story did not really continue from the end of Darksiders, so many questions were left unanswered. To simply reboot the franchise from scratch and end such a great story, without seeing it to completion, would be a disservice.

The full details for Darksiders 2: Definitive Edition have not yet been officially revealed. The game release was listed on Amazon for the PlayStation 4 with a price of $40. The listing was later pulled. The original Darksiders 2 game was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii U and Windows PC.
