According to a report from Game Informer, Avalanche Studios, the software developer responsible for the Just Cause franchise, will no longer make Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 versions of the Mad Max video game. Instead, the game will only be released for Windows PC and the next-gen consoles. Avalanche now wants to focus on developing the new-gen versions of the game. The reason for the change:  Avalanche wants to focus on improving the game’s visual effects and provide the game with broader horizons. This was a smart move and a positive step for the gaming project.

It is 2015, and it is time for developers to stop thinking about previous generation versions. In 2014, it was understandable. A generation of gamers was still switching over from the PlayStation 3 to the Playstation 4. However, the new generation of consoles is in full swing, so there is no point for a studio like Avalanche to waste time and resources on downgraded, and near obsolete, versions of Mad Max.

This way, Avalanche can devote more of its time and resources into focusing on improving Mad Max. Hopefully, the results turn out better than Star Trek: The Video Game, which was a project that had a ton of potential but turned out to be a letdown. I am definitely interested in Mad Max since Avalanche is working on it. The behind-closed-doors preview for the game at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo was impressive. The last-gen versions are out of the picture now, so the development can hone its focus on the new generation of consoles. That is the way it should be.

On the other hand, Avalanche will have even fewer excuses if the game does not turn out well. The game was not rushed, and the developers have plenty of time with it. The game was originally supposed to be released last year. Instead, the release date was delayed all the way to the third quarter of 2015. Some major recent game releases did not get the extra time to make the game that much better. Case in point, Assassin’s Creed Unity. Another example was WWE 2K15, where last-gen versions had to be developed. The final product for WWE 2K15 was not as polished as it should have been. There should be no excuses for Avalanche releasing a rushed, unpolished or broken game now.

Mad Max is scheduled for a September 1 release. The game will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
