NetherRealm Studios recently revealed a new official gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat X. The footage discloses some of the worst kept secrets about the highly anticipated fighting video game. Older versions of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade will appear in the game alongside their full-grown, adult daughter Cassie Cage. The new trailer shows off a lot more story beats for the game, along with Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade in action. It looks like the bickering, dysfunctional relationship within the Cage family will be one of the most amusing aspects of Mortal Kombat X.
In the storyline continuity of the Mortal Kombat universe, 25 years have passed. The designs of both Cage and Blade indicate that both are much older. It is quite a radical move for the franchise. However, Cage and Blade have not lost a step with their fighting skills. Even at around age 50, both fighters are still incredibly formidable and can hang in during a fight. It is interesting to see Cage and Blade as older and more seasoned, experienced Kombatants. The interplay between the divorced Cage and Blade also looks like it will be hilarious and a lot of fun. They might not know it, but both Cage and Blade are made for each other.
The gameplay footage also contains some additional quick, sly reveals. The trailer has some actual in-game fighting clips which appear to show Jax and Mileena taking part in the fights. Previously, there was only cut scene footage showing Mileena in the game. This footage all but confirms that Mileena will also be a playable character. Jax is also in the leaked story images, so his inclusion on roster is not a huge leap. In addition, Sonya Blade even name drops Jax as “General Briggs” during the trailer. At this point, since parents of the other new generation Kombatants appear, it is inevitable that Jax will materialize. Another story cutscene clip showed Kenshi standing next to Johnny Cage. Considering Kenshi’s son is one of the next generation of characters fighting with Cassie Cage, I am happy to see he is a part of the game’s story. Thankfully, Kenshi is back on the roster, and he will be fully integrated in the story mode.
Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions were recently delayed and will now be released on June 30.
