Another guest character has been revealed for the upcoming fighting video game Mortal Kombat X. This time, the lid of the revelation was blown off by none other than Xbox. The listing showed that the Predator monster from the Predator movie franchise will be the second of four new Kombatants for the upcoming Kombat Pack downloadable content add-on for the game. This is excellent news. The Predator monster was No. 2 on my previous wish list of characters for the game, and I ranked Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th as No. 3. Predator gives the franchise another fantastic guest character to add to the roster.
The addition of Predator is not too surprising. The addition of the guest and movie characters to the game made this event possible. It started when Mortal Kombat 9 used Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elmstreet series. Predator is an R-rated character that fits right alongside the gore and content level of Mortal Kombat X. Along with the Predator’s deadly weapons and abilities, the creature is a good one that translates to the new game. I am sure the developers have come up with some fun variations for the Predator’s gameplay. I cannot wait to see what nasty fatalities NetherRealm Studios has in store for the iconic movie monster. Considering what the Predator often does to its victims, it leaves the door open for some gnarly finishes and Fatality moves.
I am curious about whether Xbox had clearance to make the Predator listing when they did. The teaser announcement video did not come out until almost a day after Xbox’s reveal. If not, it seems that Microsoft and Warner Bros. Interactive failed to get on the same page. In cases such as this, the publisher or developer likes to make the reveals. Producers and voice actors are often signed to non-disclosure agreements to keep them from discussing it. Frankly, I think this is a bad idea because sometimes staff members say a little too much to the press, or something gets leaked to NeoGAF. Sometimes, the wait is due to the securing licensing deals or preparation of legal clearances. However, in the digital age, it is hard to keep things a secret. If this was a case of Xbox jumping the gun, corporations should work on getting the same page so that does not happen. That is probably difficult for companies with thousands of employees and moving parts, but it is a necessary sacrifice for wanting to keep these types of announcements a secret.
Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will first hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases follow on June 30.
