Sony PlayStation recently announced that God of War 3 will receive a PlayStation 4 remastering treatment later this summer. This is great news for one of the best games of the PlayStation 3 era to receive a fresh coat of paint for the PlayStation 4. God of War 3 is one of my favorite games, and this a great idea to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the God of War franchise.
Some of the best news about this upcoming release is that God of War 3 Remastered will feature updated graphics in 1080 and targeting 60 frames per seconds. The 60fps debate continues to rage on. However, developers do not seem to feel comfortable offering next-gen titles at 60fps for the PlayStation 4. It is unclear whether that it is too difficult. However, The Last of Us Remastered for PlayStation 4 also possessed 60fps graphics. Perhaps it is simply easier to increase the framerate for a remastered video game from the PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. Thus far, developers seem reluctant to release new games developed for the next-gen consoles at a 60fps framerate. Granted, there are still claims of conflicts with keeping framerate the same as the Xbox One releases, and the 60fps framerate for God of War 3 Remastered is not fully confirmed. The announcement says the developers are “targeting” a framerate of 60fps, meaning that there is a possibility that limit will be unreachable for the project.
In addition, this is a great way to rebuild momentum for the franchise before a potential follow-up. There was talk of a new edition in the franchise late last year. It would not be surprising if Sony PlayStation announced a new God of War title at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo. A remastered version of one of the superior installments of the franchise would provide a great palette cleanser ahead of a new sequel, or perhaps even a franchise reboot for God of War.
I would not mind seeing remastered versions of God of War and God of War 2 for the PlayStation 4 as well. Those were great, entertaining games for the PlayStation 2. I realize that God of War 3 was the obvious choice to get a remastering treatment since it was released on the PlayStation 3. However, a main remastered trilogy of God of War for the PlayStation 4 would be worth a try.
God of War 3 Remastered is due out on July 14.
