Batman Arkham Knight: Breakdown of New Gameplay Trailer

Batman Arkham Knight

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Studios released the latest gameplay trailer for Batman Arkham Knight. The release of the game is only two months away . The new gameplay trailer contains some new reveals for the games–specifically ally characters of the Bat-Family, from the DC comic books. The new reveals from the trailer are fantastic, and some new interesting features also debuted for the game.

In the “All Who Follow You” trailer, Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin and Azrael are all confirmed to make formal appearances in the final installment of Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Trilogy. The appearance of these characters makes a lot of sense. This game will not only be about Batman, but will also include what happens to Batman’s friends and family members when he goes to war against crime.

Along with the trailer, Rocksteady also announced a new gameplay mechanic for the franchise with Dual Play. According to Rocksteady, Dual Play allows players to switch between Batman and his ally characters, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman in free-flow combat. This feature sounds like an interesting idea, but I am concerned about how well it will work in execution. I would prefer it if Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman are all playable on some level. In Batman: Arkham City, Robin and Nightwing had their own set of DLC Challenge Maps for the game. Catwoman had her own set of Challenge Maps, and she was playable for her own set of story-based missions in the main Single Player campaign. Apparently, with Dual Play, players only get to portray the ally characters in combat zones. The trailer also shows that Batman can pull off combined combo attacks with his ally characters. Those look cool, but execution will be important.

Previously, Rocksteady and director Sefton Hill said there would be no co-op or multiplayer gameplay in Arkham Knight. All of the footage that has been revealed is from single-player gameplay, meaning that one player can switch between two characters. Hopefully, it will not make the gameplay too cumbersome or slow with two allies on screen at the same time.

The trailer also revealed that Alfred and the Batcave will appear in the game to some degree. I hope players will be able to visit the Batcave again during the main campaign, similar to Batman: Arkham Origins. In addition, the return of Azrael comes off as quite ominous. His lines in the new trailer hearken back to his prophecy from Arkham City. The implication is that Batman will meet his end in the game. I hope that is not the case.

Batman: Arkham Knight is due out on June 23. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.
