Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady recently revealed a Season Pass for the highly anticipated sequel, Batman Arkham Knight. The unfortunate part of the news is that the Season Pass for the game costs $40. For a Season Pass of DLC content, that price range is insane–especially considering that only a handful of details have been revealed for a DLC.
To be perfectly clear, this does not mean I am raging against the machine. I am not taking part of any wholesale boycott of Batman Arkham Knight due to the price of the Season Pass. However, the Season Pass price is ridiculously too high. Batman Arkham Origins had a Season Pass that was priced at $19.99. When a player purchases a Season Pass, he/she expects to get all the DLC content for a game at a bargain price; or it would be cheaper than getting all the DLC separately. Instead, the Season Pass comes out to the same price as a full game.
For a value of $40, Rocksteady should offer a massive game expansion for Batman Arkham Knight. Instead of just Challenge Maps and story missions, the company should offer different characters to use in free roam. I mean using Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman all in free roam mode beyond PC modifications. Let those characters be available in free roam on the console versions.
The biggest PR mistake Rocksteady made with the Season Pass announcement is providing players a price, but very little details. Rocksteady only revealed that the season pass will have some new story missions; additional super-villains; legendary Batmobile skins; advanced challenge maps; alternative character skins; and new drivable race tracks. Those details are incredibly vague. In other words, players have no idea what they are currently investing $40 in. If Rocksteady actually gave the full details of what will be available for the DLC, Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady could have better controlled the maelstrom of negativity and bad publicity that came out of this announcement. If there is new story content, players want to know it will add actual depth and meaningful replay value. Thus far, the Batmobile skins appear to be nothing more than color changes on the current Batmobile design for the game. Players want different designs of the Batmobile like the 1989 Tim Burton Batman movie version, the Tumbler, the actual 1960s Adam West Batman TV series version and more. The alternate Batmobile skins for the game do not appear to offer that option to players. If a Season Pass could do that, maybe players could see the value. Unfortunately, all the details for the Season Pass are too vague when the price is double that of a typical Season Pass.
I am disappointed in the price of the Season Pass, but it will not prevent me from playing what looks to be an awesome video game. Batman Arkham Knight will be released on June 23 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
